The Importance of Cleanliness & Toilet Hygiene

Intended for all my fellow Malaysian brothers and sisters

Ladies and Gentlemen, what I am about to share with you here today, may appear and seem very unpleasant. First and foremost, I would like to make it clear that my intent is not to offend anybody. However, I feel that there is an imperative need and urgency to highlight this matter, so that we shall all be seen as Malaysian’s with decorum.

Just a week ago, while I was in class waiting for my lecturer to arrive, a close friend and I took notice of this pretty young lady that walked into the class toilet. Although it was none of our business, we both realized that she had walked out with her hands dry and with no sign of the toilet flushing – oh you may say she was probably in there to touch up her make up or fix her outfit, however, the next person that used the toilet shortly after her proved this fact wrong.

I am sure many of you have observed this incident and for most of us, it is something that we see and have to deal with almost everyday of our lives – unfortunately.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, today I am here in great hope that I can make a significant change in every single one of you on cleanliness and proper toilet habits.

I must say that I was terribly disgusted after taking notice of the pretty girl with her bad toilet manners. Were we all brought up and thought to leave public lavatories in a filthy state after using it? Were we raised to leave the toilet without flushing and washing our hands? I think not.

I find it extremely disheartening to be in a situation where by even in my own college, on learning grounds, a place where we better ourselves, do I come across such poor toilet habits. It is a pity that we can’t achieve this simple habit of flushing the toilet, compared to the many other challenges we face academically.

So why do we do it? Why do we refuse or make no attempt to flush the toilet after use? Why do we choose to litter the lavatory? Why do we choose to leave droplets and stains all over the toilet seat? Why do we choose to flood the toilet? Why do we choose to abuse public property? Why don’t we take the initiative to clean the messes we make?

Frankly, I would be extremely embarrassed if I left any unwanted souvenirs behind. What would people think of me? What impression will people have of me? I wonder if these thoughts ever run through the minds of those who practice this incompetent behavior. Is it that hard to flush the toilet? I doubt so.

I believe that anything we do, good or bad, reflects on us. It reflects on the individuals that we are. Do we Malaysians, want ourselves to be seen and labeled as unhygienic and inconsiderate of others?

Ladies, why do we choose to clog the toilets with our, excuse-me, used sanitary pads when there is a special disposal right next to us?

Why can’t we treat public toilets, as if they were our own?

Must we resort to imposing harsh fines for not flushing the toilet? Our dear neighbor, Singapore, has long enforced a penalty of 500 Singapore Dollars for those who decline to flush. If this nasty habit continues, I feel that the next best thing to do is to initiate these penalties.

It is extremely annoying and exceptionally irritating to enter a filthy cubicle. I’m sure many of you would feel this way too.

In my point of view, Malaysia’s ‘Vision 2020’ is blurred by our care less attitude. We speak of being a developed nation in the near future, but how can we be a developed nation if we still choose to have this third world mentality?

I speak of this today, as I feel that, this issue is one that can be easily overcome and avoided.

Ladies and gentlemen, whatever I have discussed with you here today, may seem irrelevant, worthless, pointless, unimportant, and insignificant to some of you. However, I hope that for many of you, everything that I had mentioned would be thought provoking and significant. All I ask is for us to cooperate and curb this selfish attitude. Say no to dirty public toilets!

Thank You
