must we, really?
you know what. the whole media huuhaa on Mawi is really starting to piss me off. I just need to get this all off my chest

just in case you haven't heard (which is impossible cause the news was/still is everywhere) the AF3 star winner has decided not to marry his now ex fiancee Nordiana something something due to personal/family related issues and also his father passed away sometime last week (my condolences to Mawi and family)

for those who have never heard of Mawi - he's a local celebrity and winner of Season 3 Akademi Fantasia (something like making the band - except this is making the singer cum Malaysian Idol), ambassador for all sorts of products and services and is idolized by plenty of malay's, old and young across the country. to make it simpler, let's just say he's the male equivalent of Siti Nurhaliza. He's everywhere and kind of hard to miss.

i'm not a big fan of Mawi. heck i'm not even a fan of Mawi's. i don't know the title of any of his songs, how many albums he's got, his favourite food and blablabedeedee. BUT i pitty how he is eternally being harassed by the media.

i so happened to be browsing through various tv channels yesterday afternoon and when i hit tv3 i saw a very sad Mawi being interviewed at HIS FATHER'S FUNERAL. Of course he said he was sad and all of that but then came the big part - the camera actually featured close up views of the deceased and even that of Mawi giving his final farewell kiss to his father (with the zillions of camera flashlights going off)

this went all the way up to the prayers done at the mosque...

and the burial ceremony...

and this was all aired on a program titled 'Melodi' on TV3

Dear Editors/Directors/Producers losers at 'Melodi' TV3,

Have you no respect? Have you no feelings? manners? courtesy?
Brains?
Ever heard of the word privacy?
Shame on You
And shame on your useless shameless tv hosts (readers: watch the damn show if wanna know who they are)

I as an audience lost complete respect towards the cast and crew of the show and felt so disgusted when the two tv show hosts - a man fella and a lady girl something with no feelings (back at the studio) could still have the nerve to laugh, make sarcastic remarks, joke around, show no sadness (even if they did it was SOOOO fake) and suggests to viewers to pay more attention to Mawi's controversial break up.

HELLO!?! ARE YOU STUPID?! ARE YOU DUMB?!

The man's father had just died!! And here you two are suggesting we should focus on the break up?! *$%^?! Couldn't you clowns have suggested something else, something more respectful, more intelligent, like (wait, let me put this in Bahasa just incase they're too duh to understand) "..marilah kita bersama sama sedekahkan Al-Fatihah kepada Arwah Pak Atan"... or something along those lines? I think they would have earned tremendous amount of respect by doing so, and most importantly fans of the program would have been happy to know that their hosts were aware of and understood the way all of them at home felt.

I understand that TV3's 'Melodi' is an entertainment program and in all entertainment programs comes the gossip. But what I don't understand is how they can cover the late Pak Atan's (Mawi's father's name) funeral with no respect? It should not have been covered in the first place! or at least not so explicitly.

i have come to realize (and so can any tom, dick, and harry abu, hassan and rosli) after watching only several episodes of this program that it feeds and intoxicates plenty Malay viewers out there with extreme sleeze, controversy, dirty gossip and rumours (promoting rumours i would also feel) and more obviously, sheer stupidity.

Being half malay i'm very concerned with how many Malays out there are being fed with silly programs such as these. Of course, for instance, more than half of malays would rather hear stories about the next door neighbour that was rumoured to having numerous illicit affairs compared to the other neighbour who's daughter received a scholarship or was given a reputable job.

But then again, can you blame them? with all the shit they watch on tv?

And it's not just TV - it's the papers too. 'Harian Metro' a local Malay tabloid, is a fine example of something that the government should ban or something that should come under an 'X' rating. It's filled with nonsense (just flip through it and you'll know what I mean). To cut the long story short, 50% consists of gossip, 30% consists of rumours, crap stories (in bahasa its "cerita mengarut"), 10% news and 10% business.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to downplay the Malays here. But I think we Malays should shift our attention to more important things and things with more values and benefits - benda yang boleh mendatangkan kebaikan dan manfaat terhadap remaja masa kini. Kita boleh bergosip (takde hal) tapi biarlah pada topik yang kena.

We are indulging in things not worth 2 cents and we should learn to better ourselves and come out of the light where we are associated with being "spoon fed", "takers", "lazy", "stupid", "drug addicts" and being "simple minded".

And then there is the other extreme end in the Malay society (upper class, middle class, the rich, royalties and fancy pants). We should also think about associating ourselves with all the sleeze, corruption, gossips etc. Its something worth pondering on.

So kepada semua golongan-golongan elit Melayu, janganlah terlampau mengikut gaya dan budaya barat. hargailah budaya kita sendiri. janganlah kita terlalu menganggap diri kita itu bagus ataupun hebat sangat cuz there are still many yang lebih hebat daripada kita.

No matter how much we would want to think that we are superior or "well off" cuz we wear better clothes, "speak english", eat better food, travel more and experience different cultures and all the other so-so-sophisticated soso's we follow, does not mean we should point the ugly finger to the rest that don't share it. walaupun bangsa melayu mempunyai macam macam masalah (every bangsa has its own '+' and '-') janganlah kita menghentam mereka sebaliknya kita harus bantu memperbaiki kelemahan anak bangsa kita.. it will be a never ending cycle if we all just choose to remain on our own opposite ends.

i'm no perfect malay and doubt that i'll ever come close to perfection. i'm just an ordinary mixed breed that's trying to do better. i know these sort of things can never change over night, but with some effort (even in its smallest measurement) and little baby steps one at a time, i think we can all go somewhere. don't you think?

I do

Leave Mawi alone.

Leave Siti alone.

And you two (mawi & siti) should also leave the media alone. push them away or something. Ask them when they are getting married instead. Or, press for a full video nationwide screening of their loved ones funeral. with features of the deceased!

i guess that's the only way they'll learn hey?
